The award-winning ‘Making Sense’ show garden was designed for people who have smell or taste disorders. We set out to create a space for those with such disorders to explore, sit, talk and importantly, enjoy a garden in which the other senses – sight, touch and sound – were given an enhanced platform.
Our design was intentionally split over two levels to show what can be achieved in a relatively small space by the creative use of levels and heights.
A gently sculpted path gave way to a set of curved clay paver steps which led down to a secluded sunken area. Here, a wall mounted water feature created a tranquil and calming soundscape and a beautiful bespoke bench made by skilled UK craftsmen out of trees felled for sustainable woodland management was nestled in the planting. Tactile trees with striking bark framed the design and provided shade and height.
The garden was richly planted in harmonious tones with the colours blending to create stylish, impactful yet restful vista.
